Intolerance Lost

We had went out for dinner one night, and I had something with cheese in it, or some fries with ranch dipping sauce. I took my normal 3 lactaid pills to help stave off most of the discomfort dairy has given me over the past 10 years or so, drank a pitcher of Guinness (read some where that it helped digest dairy) and felt no ill affects an hour or two later. Lactaid has never worked that well. It helped prevent some of the more unpleasant problems but always fell short of stopping all symptoms.

A few days later I decided to try a tiny pinch of shredded cheese. Nothing. Tried some more later that day. Nothing. Tried some dark chocolates that had had several milk ingredients. Nothing.

Since then I’ve had pizzas, quesadillas, real-cheese omelettes, aged provolone (smelled like feet but was really good), smoked muenster, lots of cheddars, misc chocolate Halloween candy that someone brought to work, etc. I don’t think that there has been a day in the past 2 weeks that I didn’t put cheese on something, and some times a significant amount.

I really liked being lactose intolerant; it was easy to avoid eating candies and food that people brought in to work. I have yet to have straight milk, butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, etc. But as far as regular cheese goes, I’ve sure missed it. Loosing my intolerance is going to make loosing weight even harder. I now can have what I’ve been able to easily restrict myself from.

Ultimately I’m thankful for being able to digest lactose now. It has just been a weird turn of events. The only major change that has happened to me this year was that I finally made a decision to loose weight and have stuck with it. Sort of a birthday present to myself earlier this year.

So far I’ve lost just under 20% of my body weight that I started with this year. Goal for next year? To loose 1 more pound then I did this year.
